The Spark of a Movement

On May 15th, 2011, thousands of activists gathered at Puerta del Sol, a central square in Madrid, to protest the severe economic crisis in Spain. They were soon joined by tens of thousands more across Madrid, Barcelona, and other Spanish cities. This mass demonstration became known as the Indignados or 15M Movement.

A Call for Change

Participants in the 15M Movement created experimental workshops focused on participatory democracy. These discussions often led to a rejection of the existing political system, capitalism, banks, and corruption. The movement's core demands called for an expansion of basic citizen rights to include home, work, culture, health, and education.

Lasting Impact and Documentation

Although the movement eventually subsided, it left a profound impact on Spanish politics and society. It also inspired similar movements around the world.

The materials in the Princeton University Library’s collection were gathered on-site in 2011 by a participant who partnered with the library to document this historic event.
