Public text of clandestine radio broadcast by Menachem Begin, giving his explanation of the "Altalena Affair," issued on the day it ended. The Altalena Affair was a confrontation between the newly established Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Irgun, which was trying to land a cargo ship loaded with weapons. The IDF demanded that the Irgun hand over the weapons to the IDF, but the Irgun refused. The standoff continued and the IDF fired on the ship off shore, killing 16 Irgun fighters. Three IDF soldiers were also killed.
