Aleksandr Nikolaev, who wrote under the pseudonym Usto Mumin, is one of the best known Uzbek artists. His wordless illustrations juxtapose the experiences of celebrating the First of May in the Soviet Union, where children freely participate in public displays, and in Germany, where a boy attends a clandestine demonstration, is arrested when the police intervene. Shvarts' text is printed on the inside of the front wrapper.
Translated title: The Second May Day.
