The Dead Heroes project examines the erosion of historical memory through defocused portraits of Soviet World War II figures. These blurred images prompt viewers to consider whether these once-iconic individuals remain recognizable today.
In Soviet and post-Soviet contexts, heroic narratives were embedded in public consciousness via museums, literature, education, and the naming of streets and institutions. In Minsk, over 60% of streets still bear names linked to the war.
Yet, sociological research shows that most residents are unaware of the figures behind these names. The heroes persist in infrastructure, but not in memory—highlighting the disconnect between symbolic commemoration and lived historical awareness.
