Part 1 of Multi-Part Work
L.H.I.-bulletin : information - attitude - comment / Lohamey Heruth Israel = Fighters for the Freedom of Israel.
English language version of a newsletter published by the underground group, Lehi, an acronym for Loḥame ḥerut Yiśraʼel, "Fighters for the Freedom of Israel." Lehi, also known as the "Stern Gang," after its founder Avraham Stern. Lehi was a paramilitary group whose aim was to expel the British from Palestine using violence. Topics discussed in this newsletter include a withering analysis 22nd Zionist Congress, the first to meet after the Holocaust, arguing that mainstream Zionist bodies were weak, and unwilling to truly fight the British for independence. It mocks the "sad balance-sheet the Congress had to draw up: 6 million dead since the last Congress; 600 thousand "saved" since the first; more than a million in the hell of Europe..." (Issue No. 3, Jan. 1947).

Jewish Underground Ephemera from Late British Mandate Palestine
These documents capture a fascinating moment in Jewish history, a turmoil-filled “interregnum” of sorts, between the destruction of European Jewry in World War II and the establishment of Israel: the violent fight against the British, efforts to rescue Jewish refugees in Europe and smuggle them into Eretz Israel, diplomatic maneuvering over the end of the British Mandate, the proposed partition of Palestine, and anticipation of a war with the Arab world. But this collection does more than merely capture this moment. It adds nuance and layers to a discourse that can suffer from overly simplified, ahistorical, and context-free narratives about the history of Zionism, Israel, and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
