“This report presents the findings from the second nationally representative SLB Public Perception Survey that was conducted in 2021. The report further presents a comparison to the SLB’s 2020 Baseline Survey. The following sections of the executive summary present the key findings1 of the Sri Lanka Barometer Survey 2021. The sections first present the findings on the overall concept of reconciliation, then go into the eight domains that are understood by the SLB to constitute reconciliation in Sri Lanka, and lastly, present additional findings on COVID-19 and reconciliation.”
“COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on reconciliation
Key findings
Sri Lankans tend to disagree that social group relations were affected by the pandemic. However, people in the Eastern Province and Muslims disagreed the least, which could hint at policy decisions on dealing with the pandemic that affected some groups more than others, as public health and safety where prioritised over the rights and freedoms of citizens.
In the case of information availability, Sri Lankans across all provinces as well as social groups place a high level of importance on receiving information on the pandemic in their mother tongue.
Looking at impacts of the pandemic at the household level, people feel that economic factors, such as the loss of employment and income, pay reductions and the inability to provide for the household, have had the most significant impact on their lives. It may be the case that many have not yet recovered from the effects of the pandemic and their wellbeing as well as economic situation is worsening as a result of it.”
