"The drawing shows Amy, looking somewhat mature, sitting on a terrace with a view over water to what might be a lighthouse which she appears to be sketching. Teddy, mustacheless and not too close by, is lying on his stomach in the grass sticking flowers in the ribbons of Amy's hat. At the top is a pencilled note from the publishers: 'If Miss A. will return this Friday A.M. Mr. Niles will be obliged.' Under this, in ink, in Miss Alcott's handwriting is written 'Oh, please change em!' and, on the sides of the engraving: 'Amy too old & no curls. Amy is 17, slender & picturesque. Teddy much too young and no mustache. He is 21 in the story & very handsome.' At the bottom Alcott has written 'Lazy Laurence.'" --Early American book illustrators and wood engravers, 1670-1870.
