A parade and rally dedicated to Victory Day, commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in 1845.
The holiday was first declared across the 15 republics of the Soviet Union following Germany's signing of the capitulation agreement on the evening of May 8, 1945 (May 9 Moscow time).
The Soviet government announced the victory early on May 9, after the signing ceremony in Berlin.
Although the official inauguration of the holiday took place in 1945, it became a public holiday on in 1965.
