Depiction: Three figures, represented as seated at table, with all the appointments and accessories incidental to the brewing of punch, carry out the spirit of the quotation. The lover, a smart young buck, in top-boots, is rapturously clasping his hands, after a toast, in inward contemplation of the perfections of his mistress. An old Commodore illustrates the idea of a life spent in warfare - although minus an eye and a leg, he is tough and hearty, and is seemingly content with his pipe and bowl. The brutalizing results of hours devoted to mere bestial intoxication are realized in the person of a slovenly and imbecile sot.
