Medium: Etchings, Hand coloring
Depiction: Interior scene. Barber's shop, conducted on popular principles, as the notice on the lantern has it: "Shave with ease and expedition for one penny." It will be noticed that the lathering is accomplished on a wholesale scale. A boy is waiting on the customer with a small pail of soap, and is officiating with a lathering-brush of the size of a decent hearth-broom. The barber is waiting, with his razor poised in the air, ready to let it descend with a swoop on the face of the sufferer. Expedition of execution rather than an artistic delicacy of handling being the order of the day.
