Provenance
Garrett MS. 109 was written in Italy at the beginning of the 13th century, in the opinion of Richard H. Rouse, who judged from the suspension of letters, the joining or bow-biting of d and e and of d and o, as well as the paraph marks. The name of the scribe Eustasius is found in the colophon on fol. 123v. Robert Garrett (1875-1961), of Baltimore, Maryland, Class of 1897, purchased the manuscript from Quaritch on 1 October 1905. Garrett's bookplate is on the inside front cover. His gift to the Princeton University Library, 1942.

Script: Protogothic.
Decoration: Books II-XII each begin with a 6- to 10-line initial painted in orange-red, olive green, and ochre formed of interlace and foliage patterns. On fol. 31r, the initial is decorated with faint human heads, initials found on fols. 12r, 22r, 31r, 39v, 50v, 61v, 71v, 80r, 90r, 101r, 112r. Verses preceding books 4 and 6-12 begin with a 2- or 3-line red initial. A penwork interlace sketch on fol. 101v.
Binding Note
Italy, late 18th or early 19th century. Calf over pasteboard, with gilt borders and a gilt stamp in each corner.
