The tree's author, Félix Gallet, was a French national, a post-master working at the time at the bureau des postes in Geneva, and most probably a native of Châteauneuf-sur-Loire, near Orléans. Le Monde Primitif, mentioned as the inspiration for the tree, was a major historical-philological treatise composed by Antoine Court de Gébelin, incidentally (and interestingly perhaps for an American audience) a friend of Benjamin Franklin's.
