Provenance
Garrett MS. 71 was written in the south of England and was in the library of the Cistercian Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Waverley, near Farnham, Surrey. The manuscript was acquired by the London antiquarian bookseller Bernard Quaritch. Robert Garrett (1875-1961), of Baltimore, Maryland, Class of 1897, purchased the manuscript on 15 July 1925 from Quaritch. Garrett's gift to the Princeton University Library, 1942.

Garrett MS. 71 is a composite volume comprised of three distinct parts, which were written at different times between about 1175 and 1215, in the opinion of Richard H. Rouse.
Script: Protogothic, in several different hands.
Decoration: Part I: text opens with a 6-line red initial D (fol. 2r); subsequent divisions marked with 2- to 3-line plain red initials, except one blue initial (fol. 68r), and a 7-line red initial D on fol. 50v; Part II: text opens with a 4-line blue initial Q (fol. 51r); subsequent sections marked with 2- to 3-line red or blue initials; some capitals stroked in red on fols 51r-59r; Part III: text opens with 6-line red and bluish green parti-colored initial M with red pen flourishes (fol. 71r); 1- to 3-line alternating bluish green and red initials, parti-colored, or red initials for the remainder; some capitals stroked in red on fols. 71r and 81r.
Binding Note
England, 14th century. Alum-tawed deerskin (?) over slightly cushioned oak boards (approximately 10 mm thick); rebacked in the early 20th century.
