Obtained (unbound) in Rome. Was sometime in England during the middle of the 19th century, when bound by Riviere and Son in London. Pencilled note of "14" on f. 178v. Later acquired by Robert Garrett (1875-1961), Class of 1897, of Baltimore, Maryland.

Decoration: 12 miniatures of 2/3 page. 3 different types of border decoration surrounding the miniatures: 1) the Matins page (f. 21r) with full borders of blue and vermilion flowers and cinquefoil leaves in dense overall patterns on gold grounds; 2) the full borders of the Sext page (f. 62r) are embellished with mossy green rinceaux of gold, blue, pink, vermilion and green leaves, and with blue and vermilion flowers, all inhabited by small human hybrids; 3) miniatures surrounded by baguettes of abstract or foliate gold, blue and vermilion ornament and in margins by spiky ivy leaves in gold, blue, and vermilion, and gold trefoils and oval leaves, for other canonical hours of the Hours of the Virgin (ff. 40r, 52r, 57r, 66v, 71r, 79r), Penitential Psalm 6 (f. 93r), Matins of the Short Hours of the Cross (f. 112v) and of the Short Hours of the Holy Spirit (f. 120v), and Vespers Psalm of the Office of the Dead (f. 125r). Miniatures have tessellated backgrounds and tiled floors. 3-line blue or pink initials with blue or vermilion foliate ornament on gold grounds, with spandrels of pink or blue grounds, for Gospel Sequences except Matthew (ff. 15r, 16r, 18v), canonical hours of the Hours of the Virgin (ff. 21r, 40r, 52r, 62r, 66v, 71r, 79r), Penitential Psalm 6 (f. 93r), Matins of the Short Hours of the Cross (f. 112v) and of the Holy Spirit (f. 119v), Vespers Psalm of the Office of the Dead (f. 125r), and two prayers to the Virgin (ff. 168v, 172r). 2-line blue or pink initials with orange or blue foliate ornament on gold grounds for KLs of the calendar, Gospel Sequence of Matthew, psalms, hymns, chapters, collects of different hours and Office of the Dead, and six penitential psalms. 1-line champide initials for versals. Line-endings in blue and pink embellished with abstract gold ornament and white filigree. Text pages embellished with single vertical baguettes in outer margins, and foliate and floral ornament in margins except the inner. Colors of intense blue and vermilion, rose pink, chalky green.
Layout: Parchment; single column of 15 lines; 195 x 135 (100/98 x 64) mm., and 100 x 64/65 mm. (calendar).
Binding Note
Mid-19th-century, English turquoise morocco with gold-tooled lozenge centerpiece, with gauffered gilt edges, inscribed "Made by Riviere & Son" in gold at bottom of inner front cover. In turquoise morocco case with inscription "Made by Riviere & Son" in gold, and with spine-title, "Heures de la Vierge. Ms Vélin Vers 1430."
