Ms. book of hours for Rome use (calendar removed), written and illuminated in the third quarter of the 15th century in South Netherlands, possibly for a Brabant patron on liturgical grounds. The litany lists Gudula, one of the two patron saints of Brussels, as the fourth virgin, along with Gertrude of Nivelles, who was widely venerated in the Netherlands. The list of virgins is longer than those of the martyrs and confessors. Franciscan saints are prominent in the litany, as is customary of Rome use.

- Provenance
- The small size of the book, the average quality of the decoration, and the simple contents, supplemented by the Mass of the Virgin as is usually found in south Netherlandish books of hours of Rome use, indicates that this manuscript was produced for a bourgeois lay person. 15th-century financial accounts in pale brown cursive, including "1396" and amount of florins, on parchment flyleaves at beginning (verso) and end (recto). Luigi Gherardo (18th century), Italian surgeon, book plate inscribed "Di Luigi Gherardi Chirurgo". Pencilled marks of numbers 209r, 379r, 833r, 80r, and 50£ on inner front cover; 1361 on recto of beginning flyleaf; 50£ on verso of beginning flyleaf; and 80£ on verso of end flyleaf. Later acquired by Robert Garrett (1875-1961), Class of 1897, of Baltimore, Maryland.

- Decoration: Large initials in blue only with foliate infillings on gold grounds and floral borders for the principal texts. 7-line blue initial, decorated with white geometric ornament and with infilling of foliage, on gold grounds, with full border of foliate and floral ornament for Matins of the Short Hours of the Cross (f. 1r). 6-line blue initial, decorated with white geometric ornament and with infilling of foliage, on gold grounds, with full border of foliate and floral ornament for Matins of the Hours of the Virgin (f. 14r). 5-line blue initial, decorated with white geometric ornament and with infilling of foliage, on gold grounds, with full border of foliate and floral ornament for Vespers Psalm of the Office of the Dead (f. 65r). 5-line champide initials, with baguettes in inner margin, for Prime, and Vespers of the Hours of the Virgin (ff. 33r, 45r). 4-line champide initials, with baguettes in inner margins, for Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, and Compline of the Hours of the Virgin (ff. 23r, 36r, 39r, 42r, 49v). 2-line champide initials for psalms, hymns, lessons, chapters, canticles, collects in Hours and Office of the Dead, for Prime to Compline of the Short Hours of the Cross, and for Gospel Sequences. Colors of blue, beige, orange, green, and burnished gold (for backgrounds of initials, baguettes, and leaves of black tendrils). 1-line pen-work initials, alternately gold with black penwork and blue with red penwork for versals.
