Provenance
Garrett MS. 102 was probably produced in Italy for university use. The earliest identifiable owner was Thomas Rethford, Doctor of Theology, who may be identified as Thomas de Ratford, an English Franciscan who was 63rd lector at Oxford around 1340. Intermediate provenance is unknown. Robert Garrett (1875-1961), of Baltimore, Maryland, Class of 1897, purchased the manuscript on 22 december 1924 from the New York antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich (1865-1930). Garrett's bookplate is on the inside front cover. His gift to the Princeton University Library, 1942.

Aristotle, Ethica, books 1-10. This Latin translation from the Greek has been attributed to Robert Grosseteste (approximately 1175-1253), bishop of Lincoln, as it is similar to that in Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France, MS. lat. 6305, fols. 1-60v. Aristotle, Politica, books 1-8. The Flemish Dominican William of Moerbeke (approximately 1215-1286) made this translation from the Greek around 1260.
Script: Textualis semi-quadrata.
Decoration: Books open with 5-line parti-colored blue and red initials, with delicate red and blue pen infilling, extending into the margins; chapters open with 2-line blue or red initials, with pen-decoration of the other color, and marginal loops. Many blue or red paraph marks; capitals often stroked in red. A face has been drawn in the outside margin of fol. 87r, and a faint (erased) pen drawing of a person standing with hands outstretched on the front flyleaf, fol. 3r.
Binding Note
England, 17th century. Brown calf over pasteboard; double gilt lines along the outer edges of the front and back covers.
