Description: Running titles and rubrics in red ink.
Decoration: Characteristic of Padua in the style of simple roman capitals on a colored field decorated with interlaced knot patterns. Eight-line initial E (“Eusebius,” fol. 2r) in red on blue ground with gold frame, outlined in black and with infilling of red and green interlace; on upper and inner margins, blue borders decorated with red and green interlace on gold and with three parrots; on outer margin, peacock surrounded by spiraling stems of leaves and blossoms, and gold balls; in lower margin, heraldic shield of the Coppo family of Venice within red and green interlace above and a garland held by two putti. The 14 books of the text begin with a 3- to 6-line initial in green, red, or gold, usually on a dark blue ground within a gold frame outlined in black and with green, red, and puce the dominant colors, mostly with interlace in the center. Occasional plain red or blue initials, some with pale red pen flourishes.
Origin: Written and decorated in Padua in the late 15th century.
Binding Note
Italy, late 15th or early 16th century. Dark brown goatskin over poplar(?) boards (approximately 7 mm thick). Blind-stamped and tooled with concentric frames of interlacing pattern and vines and a center panel containing two large interlacing pattern stamps; punch-dotting in red, ochre, and gold; rebacked. Paper pastedowns. 5 brass bosses on upper and lower covers, upper central boss damaged; closed with 4 clasps extending from upper to lower board; top two clasps now detached; gauffered edges.
