Script: Greek minuscule script

Decoration: The illustration of Garrett MS. 5 is in most respects typical of Byzantine Gospel books dating from the 12th century. Each of the four gospels is preceded by a full-page evangelist portrait, and the titles of the gospel texts are surmounted or framed by illuminated ornament. But to this traditional repertory a further miniature has been added: a full-page frontispiece of the Virgin and Child.

Binding Note

Dark reddish brown goatskin over poplar boards chamfered at the spine. Unsupported link stitch on five sewing stations with kettle stitch. The leather covering of the boards perhaps dates from the 15th or 16th century, but it was reapplied to the newer present poplar boards as recently as the 19th century, when the manuscript was completely resewn.
