Provenance

Early ownership unknown, later found in northeastern Italy in the 18th century. In the 19th century it was in the library of Betram Ashburnham, 4th Earl of Ashburnham. Purchased by Henry Yates Thompson in 1897 and offered for sale at Sotheby's, London on May, 1st 1899. Acquired from the Paris bookselling firm of Damascène Morgrand in 1900 by Robert Garrett of of Baltimore, Maryland, Class of 1897, and donated to Princeton University in 1942.

Collation: Parchment ; fol. i + 151 ; catchwords ; modern foliation in pencil.

Layout: 15 lines per page ; ruled.

Decoration: 4 full-page miniatures and 24 smaller miniatures. Initial words in sections in blue or red boxes outlined with gold with extended floral designs in pink, blue, green and gold. Origin: Written in northern Italy, probably Florence, in the last quarter of the 15th century.

Binding Note

Later binding. Italian, late 18th century: bevelled oak boards, inlaid with ebony, mother of pearl, brass studs and bone. Leather spine. Design on the upper cover is the Battaglia arms, and the supposed Malatesta arms on the lower cover.
