Provenance

Princeton MS. 107 was written in Tortona, province of Alessandria, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The year 1477 in the birth records (fols. 46v-47r) provides a terminus post quem for this part of the manuscript. In 1970, the Princeton University Library used funds donated by Christian A. Zabriskie (d. 1970) to purchase the manuscript from the antiquarian bookseller William Salloch, Ossining, New York (Acc. no. AM 20124). A commemorative Princeton bookplate is on the inside front cover.

Notes

A compilation of selected works by St. Basil the Great, Francesco Barbaro, Lucian of Samosata, Leonardo Bruni, Xenophon, Antonio da Rho, and Niccolò Calvino.

Script: Semi-Gothic, with humanistic elements, written primarily by one scribe in brown ink. A second person, probably Niccolò Calvino himself, who is the author of the letter to the doge of Genoa, wrote in dark brown ink for the letter on fols. 52r-53v, the extract from Livy on fol. 54r, and family notes on fols. 55r-56r.

Decoration: Texts open with 4- to 5-line initials in red and/or blue with blue and red penwork decoration extending into the margins: fols. 1r, 5r, 12v, 34v, 35v, occasionally with ochre infill (e.g., fol. 15r). One similar 2-line initial on fol. 12v to mark the beginning of the text after the prologue.

Binding Note

Italy, 18th century. Marbled paper (red, blue, and ochre) over paper pasteboard, but faded and abraded, especially on the front cover; sewn on 3 parchment supports.
