Provenance

Princeton Ms. 182 is of unknown early provenance. The earliest known owner was Robert Lang (1750-1828), of Portland Place, London. The library of this British collector of Old French romances was sold in London on 19 November 1828. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), of Middle Hill, Worcestershire, acquired it at the Lang sale; it is Phillipps 3639. The manuscript was probably among the remaining Phillipps manuscripts that the London antiquarian bookseller William H. Robinson, Ltd., purchased in 1946. Those that remained in 1967 were sold by the Robinson Trust to the New York antiquarian bookseller H.P. Kraus, who offered it in 1979. The Princeton University Library purchased the manuscript from Sotheby's after the 4 -5 December 2003 auction of the Kraus inventory.

The manuscript contains only books 1-7 (prose), but not book 8 (verse). Jean Dupin, a monk at the Cistercian Abbey of Nôtre Dame de Vaucelles, Diocese of Cambrai, wrote Le roman de Mandevie around 1340. The full text was first printed in 1485 as Le livre de bonne vie, appelé Mandevie (Chambéry: Antoine Neyret, 1485) and later as Le champ vertueux de bonne vie appellé mandeuie ([Paris: Michel Le Noir, not before 1509]). Princeton MS. 182 varies in text, organization, and orthography from early printed versions.

Script: Cursiva libraria. Text, contents, and marginal headings in the hand of a single scribe.

Decoration: Two-line red initials; some pen-and-ink flourishes in borders decorated in red and yellow.

Binding Note

England, 19th century. Diced calf, with gold-tooled border and back; blue marbled endpapers. Textblock trimmed for binding with occasional losses of headings (e.g., fol. 1r) and topical headings in the margins.
