This large initial with a scene of Bonaventura teaching introduced the chant dedicated to the saint on his feast day (July 14) is by a painter-engraver-illuminator who edited a treatise on painting.
Initial B, the body of the initial being filled in with foliate designs in shades of blue. The interior of the initial a classroom scene with St. Bonaventure enthroned with a lectern before him, below which are seated four students in the habits of various orders. St. Bonaventure's eyes are on a tree bearing the figure of the crucified Christ, with red circles representing categories in his system of knowledge. Behind him hangs a medallion, above it a cardinal's hat. In the foregound a bishop's crozier and mitre.
