Item Summary

Ms. Missal, written and illuminated in Paris in the early 14th century for a Dominican nunnery, as so indicated on f. 349v: Rubric at end of 2nd responsory of the burial service, "Ibi debemus flectere genua sed tantum pro sorore nostra," followed by "Domine miserere super peccatrice." For the Dominican Convent of Saint-Louis, Poissy, France, certainly after 1347, as so indicated on f. 384v, column b: "Ad ablucionem altarium in ecclesia sororum sancti ludouici de pisciaco antiphona," antiphon for washing of altars in the church of Convent of St. Louis of Poissy.

Decoration: 2-line champide initials for KL of Kalends in Calendar, for introit, chapter of the book of the Bible, offertory, secret, lesson, collect, tract, sequence, gradual, communion, post-communion, response, and versicle, and for feast days in the Temporale and the Sanctorale, which have the ranks of memorial, three lessons, simplex, and semi-duplex in the Calendar. 3-line initials decorated with infillings of blue and gold diapers or foliage for feast days in the Temporale and Sanctorale, which have the rank of duplex in the Calendar. 11 historiated initials of 3 to 4 lines in the Temporale and Sanctorale for major feasts of Catherine of Alexandria (ranked semi-duplex in the Calendar) on f. 305r, and others (ranked totum duplex in the Calendar). 12 others cut out. Green edges around frames and stems. Colors of green, orange, turquoise blue, rose, and gray modeled with white. 2-line champide initials, with chiefly pink grounds. One 4-line decorated initial with bar border of spiky leaves and dragon terminal for Mass of Corpus Christi, f. 365r. 1-line champide initials. 2- to 5-line champide initials. 1-line initials alternating in gold with blue penwork and blue with red penwork of fine filigree in French style. Line-endings in red, blue, and gold geometric patterns.
