Translated title: Murkina's book.
One of the most controversial children's books of the early Marxist period. As Commisariat of Education, Nadezhda Krupskaya, Lenin's widow, savagely attacked Chukovskii's nonsense verses as being dangerous to the Soviet State, particularly "Chudo-derevo" (The Magic Tree) in Murkina kniga. She said that this poem about an enchanted tree that grows shoes was a frivolous comment on the current shoe shortage! Chukovskii noted in his journal that Krupskaya "had loads of energy and good sharp nails." Fortunately, Samuil Marshak came to his defense and prevented all of his children's books from being censored. Chukovskii wrote these poems for his daughter Mura and dedicated the book to her. Both father and daughter appear in V. M. Konashevich's pictures.
