Item description: During the Edo period, Japan sustained official diplomatic relations with the Koreans, Dutch, and Ryukuans. Each of these countries sent delegations to the Shogun that provided rare spectacles in Edo. The most famous processions were of the Korean embassies, whose elaborate missions included ambassadors and retinues of up to five hundred people.

Provenance: Purchased at one of three 1947 sales at Parke-Bernet or at Gimbels Department Store, New York City.
