Zahedan – Zahedan is a city in the Sistan-Baluchistan province of Iran, where many of the protests over the police killing of Mahsa Jina Amini took place. Zahedan is home to a large Baloch population, who are mostly Sunni Muslims and face discrimination and oppression from the Shi‘i Iranian regime. The Sistan-Baluchistan province has also witnessed some of the most brutal repression by security forces, who have opened fire on protestors and killed dozens of them.
Sanandaj – Sanandaj is a city in the Kurdistan province of Iran where many of the protests over the police killing of Mahsa Jina Amini took place. The Kurdistan province witnessed some of the most violent clashes between the protestors and the authorities, who tried to suppress the movement.
Fereshteh – Fereshteh Ahmadi, aged 32, lost her life on October 27, 2022, in Mahabad during the protests following the police killing of Mahsa Jina Amini. She was shot in the chest by a government forces' bullet while on her rooftop. An image of her daughter grieving by her grave circulated widely on social media.
Mona-Naghib – Mona Naghib, an eight-year-old Baluch girl, lived in Aspic, a village near the city of Saravan in southeastern Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan region. On October 23, 2022, she was shot in the head by the Islamic Republic's security forces while on her way to school. Her sister carried her to the hospital, but it was too late, and Mona passed away in her arms. This incident occurred during the unrest that erupted following the police killing of Mahsa Jina Amini in Zahedan.
