Postcards documenting the lynching of Ted Smith of Greenville, Texas.
1908
A set of photographic postcards documenting the murder of Ted Smith, an African American, aged 18, who was accused of raping a white woman in Clinton, Texas. Two are captioned in white ink: "Burning of the Negro Smith in Greenville, Tex. 7/28-08- 9:30 a.m." None of them were addressed or mailed. The postcards were enclosed in a plain envelope marked with the caption in pencil: "Greenville, TX, 28 July 1908".
