WHS copy: inscription on the upper side of the front pastedown: 'emptus a Maugerardo 28 Mai 1800.' This records the purchase of the book by Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha for 100 Louis d’or from the Benedictine abbé Jean-Baptiste Maugérard (1735–1815) of Metz.

Binding Note

WHS copy the inner side of the upper board contains offset of scattered remnants of large Gothic lettering in black and red ink. The source of the offset was a now-missing vellum leaf printed with the larger type (1:286G Textura) 26 of Fust and Schöffer’s 1457 Psalter. Close inspection of the offset ink residue, assisted by enhanced reversed digita limages reveals not only the black ink impressions of the larger Mainz Psalter type, but also, faintly, a blue-printed Psalter initial A, and portions of smaller red-printed Psalter versals. The offset text, despite the many lacunae, can be identified as the end of psalm 121 (verses 5–9: 'Quia illic sederunt […] quesiui bona tibi,' occupying 7 lines of typesetting) followed after a blank space of roughly 60 mm by all of psalm 122 ('Ad te leuaui oculos meos […] et despectio superbis' 4 verses occupying 9 lines of typesetting.). This offset is the mirror image of a lost proof setting of the edition, put into type before the text was arranged into pages to be locked in formes.
