A clever counting book in which the beautifully drawn dogs get smaller and smaller as their number increases. The last page is full of tiny canines, some no more than specks, and asks "How many dogs?" The dogs increase exponentially: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, etc.

V.M. Ermolaeva is today considered a great modern Russian woman artist. She replaced Marc Chagall as director of the Vitebsk art school when the Russian avant garde forced him into exile for being too bourgeois. She was arrested in 1934 as an enemy of the people and died in prison in Siberia. Her delightful children's books are of the utmost rarity today for they were banned and confiscated after her conviction.
