Quote from Shakespeare's Hamlet beneath title: The expectancy and rose of the fair State.
The optical trick lithograph depicts a rose. When light is projected through the picture, a hidden image of Queen Victoria appears. Spooner achieved this special effect by painting the Queen on the back of the print and attaching a layer of tissue over the painting. Both print and tissue are supported by a heavier paper frame.
