- The preface states that “It seemed to be highly desirable to preserve the substance of these speeches, as a record of the opinions which, after near twenty years of deliberation and enquiry, were entertained by our greatest statesmen, on one of the most momentous questions which perhaps ever agitated a Legislative assembly.” As such, it contains extracts from the speeches made by Wilberforce, Fox, Castlereagh, Generals Gascoyne and Tarleton in the House of Commons, and Grenville, Westmoreland, Hawkesbury, and others in the Lords.The appendix includes Mungo Park’s opinions on the slave trade, notes on the slave rebellion in Haiti, and other conflicts caused by the slave trade.
