Signed with stamp, verso: "Bennett Benson // Photographer // B. Co. 2nd Reg't U.S. Vol. Engineers".
Inscribed in ink on accompanying letter: 'Picture No. 3. 12:03 p.m. The garrison is [your?]. A guard of honor is extended to the right from the portal through which the Spanish officials are to pass to the ship that lies waiting in the harbor, strum-up, to take them to Spain. The troops are again lined up before the Palace. The flag is waving, the band marching - "to the colors." The batteries of Cabanas across the bay are waving and the national salute and the proud bier of iron and [illegible] has lost the last vestiges of a over vast domain.'
