After having completed his Muntakhab al-zamān fī tārīkh al-khulafāʼ wa-al-umarāʼ wa-al-aʻyān (cf. Brockelmann, GAL, S II, 406, 1b, no. 2) which is a chronicle from the birth of the Prophet down to the authorʼs days, he came across a book (the title and author of which are not mentioned) dealing with cosmography and pre-Islamic history. This work he abridged, gave the abridgment the title ʻUmdat al-ʻārifīn etc. and made it the first part of his Muntakhab al-zamān.
