Item Summary

Irgun announcement of its expropriation of 35,000 Palestinian Pounds/Lira Eretz Yisrael (the currency of British Mandate Palestine) from a government money train. The funds will be used to finance Irgun's war for liberation. It closes with the quote: "Gold will become iron, and iron will bring freedom to a free people." The Irgun fighters laid mines on the tracks which exploded, derailing the train. They then entered the train and stole the money. Female members of the Irgun attack squad taped nylon bags of the cash around their stomachs to conceal it while appearing pregnant. According to a 2016 article in the "Ha'aretz" English edition in which the sole remaining live participant in this operation was interviewed (Shalom Masuri, 19 years old at the time of the operation), "[a]part from its economic significance, the operation also had great symbolic value, putting the Irgun alongside other national revolutionary organizations that stole money from their government adversaries..."
