The poster depicts the Russian protected cruiser Aurora (крейсер Аврора). Aurora was one of three Pallada-class cruisers, built in Saint Petersburg for service in the Pacific. One of the first incidents of the October Revolution, 1917 in Russia took place on the cruiser Aurora, which reportedly had fired the first blank shot, signalling the beginning of the rebellion for those involved. The cruiser became one of the main symbols of the October Revolution. Artist, publisher and year of publication not identified.

Princeton has a large and expanding collections of Russian and East European posters. The collection documents poster art as used in advertising for performances and films and in and a variety of Party-sponsored campaigns and ephemera. It is an illuminating complement to Princeton’s expanding special collections of documents of early-Soviet visual culture.
Part of Princeton Slavic Collections
