Notes
"On the side which bears the printer's name is a woodcut view of a field with trees and a barn, etc., while in the distance a rainstorm is blowing away and a rainbow appears. There are slight differences in this view on many of the bills, such as in the number of trees shown and in the borders, differences emphasizing the words 'To Counterfeit is Death' which are printed beneath the view. On the other side appear the number of the issue, 9823, the statement that the bill is to pass current according to an Act of General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, passed March 20, 1777, the date of the bill (April 10, 1777) and the signature of the official or officials signing the bill. At the lower left-hand corner appears a small woodcut showing a portion of the arms of Pennsylvania. The borders of the various bills differ." --Early American book illustrators and wood engravers, 1670-1870.
